Taste and See: How to Trust in God's Goodness Even When Life Is Hard

David wrote one of the most confident declarations of faith in all of Scripture while His life was falling apart. What he discovered in that moment is something every believer can hold onto today.

What Does It Mean to Boast in the Lord?

Psalm 34 opens with a bold statement: "I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul shall make its boast in the Lord." - Psalm 34:1-2

This is not a boast in personal achievement or circumstance. It is a boast in the greatness of God, the goodness of Jesus, the sacrifice He made, and the victories He won. It is a confidence rooted entirely in who God is.

What makes this even more remarkable is the context in which David wrote it. His life was under serious threat. King Saul wanted him dead. He was living in enemy territory. He was even pretending to be insane just to survive. And yet, in the middle of all of that, David declared that his soul would boast in the Lord.

What Can Psalm 34 Teach Us About God's Character?

Psalm 34 is packed with promises that reveal who God is and how He moves in the lives of those who trust Him.

• Deliverance from fear: "I sought the Lord and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears." - Psalm 34:4
• God hears and answers: "This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him, and saved Him out of all His troubles." - Psalm 34:6
• Divine protection: "The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, and delivers them." - Psalm 34:7
• No lack for those who seek Him: "Those who seek the Lord shall lack no good thing." - Psalm 34:10
• Thriving in any season: "They looked to Him and were radiant, and their faces were not ashamed." - Psalm 34:5

That last point is worth sitting with. Radiant faces. Not just surviving, but thriving. Not just in good times, but in hard ones too. God calls His people to be a people who thrive regardless of their circumstances.

How Did David Stay Confident in God During Difficult Times?

David had a word spoken over his life. He had been told he would be king. That promise gave him a foundation to stand on even when everything around him looked impossible.

When Goliath stood before the armies of Israel, David did not hesitate. He had already seen God come through for Him when He killed a lion and a bear. He ran toward the giant with confidence, not because of his own strength, but because he was certain that God was with Him.

That same confidence is available to every believer. Trusting in God's word and His promises is the foundation of a life that does not crumble under pressure.

What Does "Taste and See" Actually Mean?

"O taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed is the man who trusts in Him." - Psalm 34:8

At first glance, this phrase seems unusual. Tasting and seeing are two completely different senses. But together they point to something important: experiencing God's goodness is not just intellectual. It is personal and real.

So how do we actually taste the goodness of God? Scripture gives a clear answer.

Jesus said, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." - Matthew 4:4 (quoting Deuteronomy 8:3)

We taste God's goodness through His Word. We receive it by faith.

What Is the Connection Between Faith and Experiencing God?

Jesus said, "Let not your heart be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in Me." - John 14:1

Paul wrote, "For we walk by faith, not by sight." - 2 Corinthians 5:7

And Habakkuk declared, "The just shall live by his faith." - Habakkuk 2:4

Faith is the means by which we taste and see. We open God's Word, we believe what Jesus says, and we trust Him for what we cannot yet see. That is how the goodness of God becomes real and tangible in our lives.

Hebrews 11:1-2 puts it plainly: "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony."

Faith gives substance to what is not yet visible. It is not wishful thinking. It is confident trust in a God who has proven Himself faithful again and again.

Why Does Trusting God Lead to Blessing?

The psalm says it simply: "Blessed is the man who trusts in Him." - Psalm 34:8

Blessing is not the result of perfect circumstances. It is the result of placing your trust in a perfect God. David was not blessed because his life was easy. He was blessed because he chose to seek the Lord, believe His promises, and keep His eyes fixed on God even when everything around Him was uncertain.

That is the secret David had learned. Not a formula or a technique, but a posture of the heart. Simply trust God. Trust His Word. Trust His promises.

God Is Always Present and Always Listening

God is omnipresent. He is everywhere, at all times. That means every prayer you pray reaches Him. Every cry for help is heard. Every moment of need is met with His presence.

When we pray, we are not sending a message into the unknown. We are reaching out to a God who is already there, already listening, already moving on our behalf.

"I sought the Lord and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears." - Psalm 34:4

Life Application

This week, choose to taste and see. Open your Bible and read a promise of God. Do not just read it as information. Receive it as food for your soul. Believe it. Speak it out. Let it become the foundation of your confidence, just as it was for David.

Whatever you are facing right now, whether it is fear, lack, illness, or uncertainty, bring it before God in prayer. Trust that He hears you. Trust that He is good. And let your soul boast in the Lord, not because your circumstances are perfect, but because your God is.

Ask yourself these questions as you reflect this week:

• Am I allowing my circumstances to define my confidence, or am I allowing God's Word to define it?
• When did I last truly taste God's goodness by spending time in His Word with faith?
• Is there an area of my life where I need to stop relying on what I can see and start walking by faith?
• What promise from Scripture can I hold onto this week as my anchor?

God is good. His Word is true. And blessed is the one who trusts in Him.
